Is it still OK to murder off immoral teenagers in horror films? In a typical ’80s or ’90s horror film, who typically goes out first, the stoner or the teenagers having sex?
Ha! This is a hotly debated subject. Although fewer immoral teenagers are getting the boot, it still happens. Someone is severely impaled by their own bong in Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood, which is one of the strangest stoner fatalities I’ve seen. I believe the heyday of stoner fatalities was in 1980s slasher flicks, but it does happen now and again. In terms of who goes out first, the stoner or the teenagers having sex, it depends on the movie, but I believe the stoner has a better chance of surviving. However, if you’re using marijuana or having sex in a ’80s horror film, your chances aren’t good.
Is it still stoner-loners who leave before the third act, or has the horror genre evolved in its depiction of cannabis usage as society embraces the plant more?
It has undoubtedly changed through time. Cannabis usage used to be considerably more taboo, and this was represented in cinema. It’s now legal in a lot of locations. Stoners used to be killed all the time; today, I see them making it to the finish and even defeating the antagonist.
What are you looking forward to seeing at the Mile High Horror Film Festival this year? What can fans anticipate from the show?
I’m looking forward to many new independent horror films this year, including the zombie feature picture Brain Freeze. We’ve also got seven short programs for you! We take great pleasure in presenting the finest new horror short films from across the globe. A film festival is unique in that it features films that are not available anywhere else; it provides an opportunity to view them before the broader audience.
What’s on your Halloween movie watch list? What are the must-see movies each year?
Personally, I’m a big admirer of The Shining. The actors who portrayed the twins and the bartender in the film have visited us. It has so many connections to Colorado that it’s a must-see. Stanley Kubrick is a true genius. Aside from that, there are a few popular films in October that I’m really looking forward to, such as Last Night in SoHo and Halloween Kills. Of course, this is in addition to what we’ll be showing at the Mile High Horror Film Festival!
